◇Details / Theory

◇Averaging cost over a sequence of operations.

Purpose: To find the average cost of an operation in a sequence, even if some individual operations are very expensive. Provides a guarantee on the total cost of the sequence. Use Case: Data structures where occasional expensive operations restructure/reorganize to make subsequent operations cheaper (e.g., dynamic arrays/vectors, hash tables with resizing). Methods:
Aggregate Method: Determine total cost T(n) for a sequence of n operations, then amortized cost is T(n) / n.
Accounting Method: Assign different "charges" (amortized costs) to operations. Overcharge cheap operations to build "credit" to pay for expensive ones later.
Potential Method: Define a potential function Φ associated with the data structure state. Amortized cost = actual cost + change in potential. Credit is stored as potential energy.

◇Common Pitfalls

Confusing amortized analysis with average-case analysis — amortized gives a guaranteed per-operation bound over a sequence, not a probabilistic average. Forgetting that amortized cost is per-operation, not total cost.

◇Summary

TL;DR — Amortized analysis finds the average cost per operation over a sequence, even when some operations are expensive. Three methods: Aggregate, Accounting, and Potential.
